Since 2013 LAYAYA has offered Culinary Arts in our programming to help young people gain confidence and skills in the kitchen!
Fall of 2025 we will continue the tradition with a special 5-week session for young chefs ages 7-12.
(We will add additional sessions for ages 12-16 in 2026)
Since 2013, LAYAYA Roux Krewe Culinary Arts has provided young people with a hands-on introduction to Louisiana’s rich food culture, culinary traditions, and essential kitchen skills. We are proud to collaborate with Plaquemines Parish Arts, Parks & Recreation to expand this popular program and provide more opportunities for youth in our parish to learn the art of cooking.
The 5-week program will meet once a week for 90-minute sessions. Students will progressively build skills in cooking, safety, and food culture. The session culminates in a graduation dinner during the 5th week, where participants will prepare and serve a meal to their invited guest(s).
Classes start Saturday October 18th and run through Saturday November 15th (1:30pm-3pm)
There is a maximum of 20 participants per session.
Through Roux Krewe students will:
Master Kitchen Safety: Proper knife handling, stove/oven use, sanitation practices.
Understand Measurement & Recipes: Learn to measure accurately, adjust serving sizes, and adapt recipes.
Build Culinary Skills: Practice chopping, sautéing, baking, seasoning, and plating.
Explore Food Culture: Discuss why South Louisiana eats the way it does and the history of our culinary traditions.
Support Local Food Systems: Learn the value of sourcing ingredients from local farmers and fishermen.
Collaborate & Create: Work together to plan, cook, and serve a meal for their families.
Graduation Dinner Experience
The final session is both a celebration and an application of everything learned. During this event:
Participants prepare and serve a meal featuring locally sourced ingredients.
Each student invites 1 guest (included in the program fee).
Parents may purchase an additional guest ticket (if space is available) to help offset food costs.
A slide show will be presented, showcasing photos and moments from the students’ 5-week journey.
Each participant will receive a Graduation Certificate, which also qualifies them for progression into the Intermediate Roux Krewe Culinary Program.
Thanks to a special partnership with Plaquemines Parish Department of Arts, Parks & Recreation this 5-week session is offered at the rate of $50 per student.
Space is limited. Registration inquiries will be responded to in the order received. Please fill out and send the form below. We’ll email you to set up a time to complete the registration paperwork. Students are officially registered once the paperwork is finished and the $50 session fee is paid.
